This post goes for all skincare not just Korean skincare. I reckon that only by trial and error you will truly be able to find the ingredients that are not suitable for our skin but there are some ingredients that you should try to avoid all together if you have dry or sensitive skin!
1. Alcohol
Alcohol, alcohol denat, SD alcohol or isopropyl alcohol that are high on the ingredient list you should avoid no matter what skin type you have! These kinds of alcohols will only dehydrate your skin and have negative long term consequences such as erode the surface of your skin and negatively affect how your skin will renew itself! Stay away!😨Alcohols like cetyl and stearyl alcohol are called fatty alcohols that are non-irritating and can be beneficial for the skin.
2. Exfoliating Acids
AHA, BHA and PHA acids have become a bit of thing in skincare...If you want to know more about the difference of these acids watch the video below. Through trial and error I think is the best way to find which kind of exfoliating acid would be good for your skin...I find that it is very easy to overdo the exfoliating since a lot of products these days seem to contain them.I learned that lactic acid and glycolic acid together were extremely bad for my dry combo skin! The product I was using at the time really damaged by skin surface and it took over a month to heal...Citric acids, maleic acid and salisylic acid are also part of the exfoliating acids family and work in different ways.
Exfoliating acids can be abrasive and irritate the skin so use them with caution!
3. Synthetic Fragrance
Examples of synthetic fragrance include: Parfum, Linalool, Citronellol, Cinnamal and Limonene which are still commonly used in many products (not just skincare)! It is impossible to know all of the ingredients used to make these scents which is a massive concern! There can be over 5000 molecules used to make one of these fragrances and some of the are most likely irritants! 😱 So if you have a sensitive skin it is best to stay away from products with synthetic fragrance...Fragrance will also always cause sensitising reaction on skin. You might not see it or feel any kind of reaction until many years later.
4. Essential Oils (natural fragrance)
This is definitely a good option when it comes to fragrance for most other skin types but can be problematic for some. Some chemists argue that essential oils contain many of the skin irritants that synthetic fragrances do...Essential oils can be beneficial to the skin but they can also be volatile due to their strong aroma release. Some of the essential oils include: lavender oil, eucalyptus, rose flower extract, lemon, peppermint etc.
Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream has plenty of essential oils such as lavender oil, eucalyptus and lemon peel oil.
5.Mineral oil
This one upsets me a lot because I keep seeing this ingredients being used in MANY moisturisers and it has been proved to be bad for the skin😡. Mineral oil only creates an oily layer to the skin to make it look temporarily plump and hides wrinkles. In reality it blocks your pores, causes build up bacteria and irritates the skin.
6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS)
Mostly found in shampoo but are often found in cleansers and sunscreens as well. SLS give products that foamy lather which leave the skin feeling squeaky clean. SLS can be extremely harsh for the skin as they strip away skin's natural oils which can lead to dry and irritated skin.
TOSOWOONG Enzyme Powder wash is packed full of different kinds of SLS.
7. Chemical sunscreens
Like synthetic fragrance, chemical sunscreens also contain a variety of chemicals which makes them more likely to be irritating to the skin. Avobenzone, oxybenzone, ecamsule, and octocrylene are chemical filters that could potentially cause irritation.
Opt for mineral sunscreens with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide if you have sensitive skin.
Purito centella green level unscented sun SPF50+ PA++++ is a mineral sunscreen that is very good for sensitive skin.
